Founded by Swami Dayananda Saraswati in 1875, Arya Samaj has a prominent place in Indian society. The marriage under the Arya Samaj ceremony is conducted in accordance with the Vedic rituals, it is provided under the Arya Samaj Marriage Validation Act, 1937 in addition to the provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Hindu Marriage is equally applied to the Arya Samaj.
However, since the people belonging to the Arya Samaj do not believe in idol worship, their marriages are performed by different rituals than the Hindus.
Rituals in Arya Samaj
All hymns recited during the marriage ceremony are to be explained to the bride and groom.
Just like the Hindu ceremony, marriage rituals are performed around the fire and are observed as the transition of the wedding couple from Brahmacharya to Grihastha Ashram.
Eligibility for Arya Samaj Marriage
The bride and the groom shall be 18 years and 21 years old respectively.
Any person who is a Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, or Jain can perform Arya Samaj Marriage.
Also, a person who is not a Muslim, Christian, Parsi, or Jew can perform marriage through the Arya Samaj Marriage.
Inter-caste marriage and inter-religious marriages can also be performed in an Arya Samaj Marriage, only if the couple getting married, neither of them are a Muslim, Parsi, Jew, or Christian.
In case a non-Hindu couple wishes to get married through Arya Samaj Marriage, the Samaj allows them to get converted through a process known as Shuddhi. Thus, if Muslims, Parsis, Jews, or Christians, out of their free will and consent wish to convert and embrace the Hindu religion, the Arya Samaj Mandir would perform a ritual called shuddhi which means purification, after which such a convert can perform Arya Samaj Marriage.
